Fisk Jubilee Singers radio play

A play about the Fisk Jubilee Singers, who toured Victorian England, is being repeated today on BBC Radio 4 and will be available on iplayer for one week - go here to listen if you read this in time.

It was written by the late Adrian Mitchell and originally intended for the theatre. All the background you need is in the above link although there is a more detailed account, here, of why it wasn't produced onstage as intended.

Having listened to the orginal broadcast I would recommend it but the impression I retain is that it felt like there was a missing dimension - that is, you could imagine how much the presence of the singers onstage for the whole time would have added. Reduced or transplanted to radio I suspect you become more aware of the stylised aspect, or at least I was. But don't let that put you off.

It was directed by Marilyn Imrie.
